(i.e. You can\u2019t do it on \/root unless you boot from a rescue CD )<\/p>\n<p>First unmount the file system<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>umount \/big1<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Next, convert ext3 \u2013> ext2 filesystem by turning off journaling<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>tune2fs -O ^has_journal \/dev\/sdb1<br \/>\ne2fsck -v -f \/dev\/sdb1<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In VSPHERE Client Edit settings on the VM and Increase the size of the.vmdk<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Right Click on the VM in the tree<br \/>\nSelect Edit Settings\u2026.<br \/>\nSelect the Hard Disk you want to grow.<br \/>\nEnter New Size<br \/>\nClick OK<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To get the RUNNING OS to recognize the  new drive size.<\/p>\n<p>REMOVE the hard drive ( but tell it to keep the data!)<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Do this by clicking the remove button when the hard disk is selected.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>RE-ADD the disk by clicking ADD \u2013 select Hard Drive. Select use existing VMDK file.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Browse to the Data Storage for the VMDK you just removed and add it back.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you run dmesg on the OS it should show the Drive being removed and then re-added.<\/p>\n<p>Now when you do fdisk you\u2019ll see the larger size.<br \/>\nIn FDISK you resize the partition by deleting it and recreating it to use all the cylinders.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>fdsik \/dev\/sdb<br \/>\np<br \/>\nd<br \/>\nn<br \/>\nHit enter twice<br \/>\nw<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Run resize2fs \/dev\/sdb1 to get the filesystem to recognize the larger partition size<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>resize2fs \/dev\/sdb1<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Convert back to ext3<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>tune2fs -j \/dev\/hdax<br \/>\ne2fsck -v -f \/dev\/hdax\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mount the filesystem<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>mount \/big1<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>NOTE: This can only be done on filesystems that can be unmounted.
